The following are resources that might also be available to provide education, treatment, and support:

  • DeVos Children's Hospital is a unique opportunity for West Michigan. They offer the medical and behavioral expertise to assist with treatment of many of the most challenging congenital or acquired developmental disabilities in addition to being able to offer the breadth of resources needed to assist in pediatric development. DeVos Children's Hospital is a nationally recognized provider for pediatric care. www.devoschildrens.org
  • The Gray Center is a tremendous organization supporting families, adults, and children confronted with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD's). They offer free parenting, young adult, and children seminars devoted to this area. The Gray Center has numerous resources for understanding and assisting with the progression of individuals with an ASD. www.thegraycenter.org
  • Autism and Asperger's Associates is located in Rockford, Michigan. They offer a variety of groups and family seminars focusing on ASD's. Their seminars offer supports to parents and professionals, but more importantly, there are creative activity groups and social-based skills acquisition groups for individuals with an ASD. www.autism-asperger-associates.com
  • Grand Rapids Public School System has various supports and opportunities for children in need. This website provides information about the services offered from Early Childhood Interventions through Secondary Schools and Special Education. This is a useful link to learn more about the academic services in the community. http://web.grps.k12.mi.us/
  • The Children’s Assessment Center is devoted to helping children in the Grand Rapids area who are the victims of violence or sexual abuse. www.cac-kent.org/
  • Network 180 is the Grand Rapids agency working to support families to identify and receive treatment when opportunities might be limited by insurance or financial abilities of the family. They also assist with identifying needs for hospitalization, residential, or other treatment needs. www.cmhsa.org/Services.aspx
  • Specialty Programs are offered within the Grand Rapids and other public school districts. However, there are specialty school programs offering unique educational opportunities. Montessori schools, charter schools, and other academies are available. There are two other unique educational opportunities, who have made their services and educational curriculum more known to BRAINS, LLP.

  • C.S. Mott’s Children’s Hospital is a hospital supported by the University of Michigan and offering services to children throughout Michigan in needed. The website offers information on services, education, and assistance for families - www.med.umich.edu/mott/
  • Children’s Hospital of Michigan is another of the specialty hospital’s in Michigan endeavoring to aid children and their families. This center is located in Detroit - www.chmkids.org/
  • The State of Michigan offers a variety of support and organizations to assist with treatment, education, funding, and to gain a broader understanding of resources within your community and the state. This information can be found at: www.nichcy.org/stateshe/mi.htm
  • Bridges4kids has created a website to find Early On resources for infants and young children with developmental disabilities and specialized service needs. The primary website for this program is: www.bridges4kids.org/
    • For specific information relating to Michigan, there is a separate link, connected to the one above. http://earlychildhoodmichigan.org/ is the state specific link for education on disabilities, other links, a medical dictionary, information on immunizations or poisoning, and other valuable information.

National

  • National Institute of Child Health and Human Development: This is a tremendous resource with research, funding and research opportunities, and valuable information provided by the National Institutes of Health -  www.nichd.nih.gov
  • National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke: This website provides information in an user friendly A-Z listing of disorders and factual information sheets on the condition, treatment, prognostics, and organizations conducting research or having possible funding options -  www.ninds.nih.gov/
  • American Academy of Pediatrics: This is a website devoted to the health and well-being of children. The website offers parent education, books, and advocacy for children in need. www.aap.org/
  • National Center for Learning Disabilities: This is an extremely useful resource for families to gain additional understanding learning disabilities and education. The LD InfoZone has user-friendly fact sheets on learning difficulties, deficits, and treatment ideas - www.ncld.org/
  • National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities: The center promotes health of infants, children, and adults to enhance general living/potential. The family can find information on health related contributions to childhood disorders, medical problems, and ways to optimize health during a pregnancy - www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/default.htm
  • National Organization for Rare Disorders: The institute is devote to research, understanding, treatment, and assisting children and families with infrequent disabilities/medical conditions that can have devastating effects on health and overall well-being - www.rarediseases.org/search/rdblist.html
  • Zero to Three: This is a website design to understand development, infantile disorders and a different diagnostic classification for young children. These diagnoses, similar to other medical concerns, are not commonly associated with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual or International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems - www.zerotothree.org/
  • National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders: This is another of the National Institutes of Health’s educational pages. As implied, services and education focus on hearing related concerns and more subtle concerns that can be overlooked, such as Central Auditory Processing concerns – http://nidcd.nih.gov/index.asp
  • National Center on Sleep Disorders Research: Understanding sleep and co-existing concerns can become detrimental in many areas of life/functional abilities.   • Kennedy Krieger Institute: This is another resource offering diagnostic specific information, education, and events.
