BRAINS offers groups ongoing throughout the year, some are time limited while others are open groups. Please contact BRAINS for current group/seminar offerings.

Social Awareness Groups – are currently being facilitated by Laura McCloud, M. Ed. and continue enrolling additional children. The group is covering topics such as what is expected in a group (group dynamics) how to "read" others using social cues, facial cues, body language and the environment. Additional areas of focus also include understanding friendships, what makes a good friend, repairing friendships, conversations-the give and take, how to participate in and staying on topic. The curriculum is based on Michelle Garcia Winner.

Young Adult Male Autistic Spectrum Disorder Group – has been active for approximately 1-month. This is a process oriented group assisting young men with high functioning ASD’s to continue there progression toward into adulthood. The group offers opportunities for them to work together to discuss frustrations challenging them, strategies to move beyond limitations, ways of interacting with parents or others putting limits and expectations in place, and also to offer a social outlet for individuals who might also be isolative.

Adolescent Male Autistic Spectrum Disorder Group – has also been active. This is another process oriented group for adolescent males with moderate to high functioning ASD’s, who continue to be confronted by peer and academic pressures, parent expectations, and struggling with motivation to engage in family, social, or school related activities. The group offers an educational component, but more importantly encourages dialogue between groups members so that they can “problem solve” areas of concern together.

Sibling Group – The purpose of this group is to provide an avenue for brothers and sisters of individuals with disabilities to share and learn about the challenges they face. They will be provided information and support that could help them in understanding and learning how to positively coexist with their sibling(s) with specific challenges. Along the way they, hopefully, will have some fun!

Transition Planning – This process involves working with adolescents and their parents/guardians on exploring long-term goals for success after high school. This may involve developing a direction that works for the adolescent based on their current strengths and weaknesses. The purpose of this transition planning is to help individuals and those close to them create a cohesive plan for succeeding in school, home and the community with an emphasis on the final goal of being independent and successful after high school.

Groups Being As Soon As Children/Adolescents/Parents are Registered:

Specialty Awareness/Play Group – is also being developed for PPI level (ages 3-5) includes learning through play, how to share and taking turns with friends, and includes sensory integration. This group will begin as soon as 3 – or more children are enrolled for the group.

GirlSpeak – self-esteem and communication for elementary age girls. Aspects of social communication, body image, and self-concept will be addressed.

ADHD/ADD: How do I keep from going insane? - designed to educate parents on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). This course will give you a supportive place to connect with other parents who share the same challenges, strengths and humor in the home, social environment and academic setting as well. Come and share your journey with one another as we learn what ADHD and ADD truly is and isn’t and how you can learn to figure out what is your child’s personality and what is the ADD/ADHD.

Introducing a family weight-management program
SHAPEDOWN – for kids and teens: This 10 week family-based behavior modification intervention addresses food, activity, psychosocial and family system issues which frequently underlie weight or eating problems. Program is for kids and teens and focuses on behaviors associated with self-esteem, eating environments, weight gain, and, peers.

Neurofeedback – Understanding How to Train Your Brain: for parents/adults wanting to learn more about what neurofeedback is, how it works, and to explore if neurofeedback would be beneficial for their child/themselves. Registration required.

Sexuality and Adolescents/Young Adults with ASD/PDD – for parents concerned about the sexual/relational development of their young adult.

The Anatomy of Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Understanding Differences in Structure – for parents, educators, and clinicians wanting to know more about ASD’s.

An Overview of IEPs, Services and Accommodations– for parents wanting to learn more about their rights, services available, and how to best access services for their child, regardless of diagnosis.

Safety Skills Group Ages 4-5 and 6-7 - focuses on safe touch for younger children in a myriad of settings. Many parents have approached me over the years asking how do they talk to their children about safe touch, what is allowed and what isn’t allowed between their child and other individuals. This class will help open that door! Come, have your child join the fun and learn some assertiveness skills along the way.

What is Neuropsychology Anyway? – for parents, educators, and clinicians wanting to know more about how an evaluation and treatment protocol can be developed through testing.

My Child is a Mess – for parents of late elementary and middle school students with poor organizational skills and time management difficulties. Aspects of frontal lobe/executive functioning deficits and use of environmental cuing will be discussed. Resources and handouts will be provided.

Understanding Mood Disorders in Children: Is this Bipolar or What? – for parents, educators, and clinicians wanting to know more about mood disorders.
